Nov. 24, 2009 – Campaign Update

Dear friend,

I am grateful for all your interest and support in my campaign for New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands.

I’m determined to return to the land office and once again build a team of knowledgeable, hard working, and ethical people.  It is increasingly clear there’s much to be done to repair, reform and restore credibility and trust in the Land Office.

Late last week we learned that another bad land exchange is underway at the State Land Office. This again demonstrates the importance of honest, transparent, and accountable leadership at the land office. We cannot afford anything less!

White Peaks Land Exchange

Northeast New Mexico is home to the extremely valuable area known as Whites Peak. This important and valuable public land could soon be lost to New Mexicans, all due to an ill-conceived and flawed exchange overseen by the current Land Office administration.

Like the disposal of valuable lands in Las Cruces, this exchange has not been an open process, and people have not been invited to participate in what is best for the trust and New Mexico. I’m glad to see sportsmen groups highlighting this issue and working to make people aware of this type of transaction at the land office.

Please see my statement on this potential swap and related news coverage.

Thanksgiving 2009

The holidays offer us time to reflect on our blessings and spend time with our families. Please know I am grateful for all your interest and support in my campaign to Restore the Trust in our land office.

Thanks!
Ray Powell, MS, DVM
